Irish authorities have announced the recall of almost 13,000 passports after a technical software issue caused recently issued documents to fall short of international travel standards, potentially leading to problems at border control.

According to Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the issue affects passports issued between December 23, 2025, and January 6, 2026. A fault introduced during a software update resulted in the omission of the IRL country code from the printed documents — a key identifier used by automated border control systems and eGates worldwide.

In total, 12,904 passports were impacted. While the documents remain legally valid, the missing country code may prevent them from being accepted by automated border systems in some countries. To reduce travel disruption, Irish authorities have notified international border agencies through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Affected passport holders have been contacted directly by email. The Passport Service will reissue all faulty documents free of charge, without requiring citizens to submit a new application. Any related costs, including postage and replacement visas, will be reimbursed, and all reissued passports will carry new passport numbers.

The issue emerged following a software update used in the passport printing and personalization process. Similar incidents highlight the growing dependence of government services on complex digital systems, where even minor technical errors can lead to large-scale administrative consequences.

The Irish passport recall underscores the critical role of software reliability in modern identity documents. A seemingly small technical fault can translate into significant real-world travel risks for thousands of citizens.
