A Russian “sleeper” spy was exposed through her cat’s microchip

A domestic cat’s microchip became the decisive clue that helped uncover a Russian undercover agent who had lived in Italy for years under a false identity while attempting to infiltrate NATO-linked circles. The case highlights how minor everyday details can unravel even carefully constructed intelligence operations.

The investigation revealed that the agent had spent more than a decade in Italy posing as a Peruvian jewelry maker. During that time, she deliberately built relationships with individuals connected to military and political circles, including people close to NATO’s presence in Naples.

After journalists exposed her cover, the woman disappeared from Italy, and her real identity remained unclear for months. The breakthrough came from an unexpected source — her cat, which carried a mandatory EU-compliant 15-digit microchip required for animal travel.

Reporters traced the microchip number through leaked Russian databases, leading to a veterinary clinic record in Russia and, ultimately, to a social media profile featuring the same cat. This allowed investigators to identify the agent as Olga Kolobova.

  • The investigation forms part of broader work by an international team of investigative journalists led by Christo Grozev. Such “sleeper” agents are trained to live quietly under false identities, slowly integrating into societies while establishing long-term access to influential networks.

  • Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the subsequent dismantling of many intelligence networks in Europe, these low-profile operatives have become increasingly valuable assets for the Kremlin.

  • The case illustrates that in an age of data leaks and digital footprints, operational security extends far beyond forged documents and cover stories. Even seemingly trivial details — such as a pet’s registration — can become decisive vulnerabilities in modern espionage.
