Stephen Cramer, a New Orleans political consultant, has pleaded guilty to creating a fake robocall with Joe Biden’s voice aimed at voter suppression. He is charged with a crime and faces a $6 million fine from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Stephen Cramer, a 54-year-old political consultant from New Orleans, pleaded guilty to creating a fake robocall using artificial intelligence technology to imitate the voice of President Joe Biden. He paid $150 to create a digital recording of Biden’s voice, then hired a telemarketing firm to distribute the recording to more than 5,000 voters. The robocall urged voters not to vote in the New Hampshire primary, claiming their vote only counts in November. This led to an investigation by local and federal authorities.

The fake robocall created by Cramer was part of a larger scheme to lower Biden’s voter turnout in order to boost Congressman Dean Phillips’ chances for the Democratic nomination. Cramer admitted that the purpose of his actions was to draw attention to the dangers of using artificial intelligence in politics. However, his actions caused a significant response, and now he faces serious punishment for his actions.

Cramer is charged with 13 counts of voter suppression and 13 counts of improperly using technology to impersonate a candidate. The FCC also proposed that Cramer be fined $6 million for misinformation and illegal use of technology to create fake calls. This is the first time in the US that an offense related to the use of deepfakes for robocalls has received such a serious punishment.
