Alphabet challenges Starlink

Alphabet has announced the launch of its own Taara project, which aims to change the approach to internet infrastructure by using wireless data transmission using laser beams. This innovative technology has the potential to become a competitor to Elon Musk’s Starlink, offering faster deployment, lower cost and improved coverage in hard-to-reach locations.

Taara Lightbridge technology provides data transmission using invisible laser beams, which significantly simplifies the process of building infrastructure compared to traditional fiber-optic networks. The main advantage is the possibility of rapid installation, which can take a few hours instead of years to build.

  • The system is able to transmit information over a distance of up to 12 miles without the need for physical connections, making it an ideal solution for remote areas. Moreover, laser networks can provide data transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps, sometimes even exceeding the performance of fiber-optic communication.
  • Taara technology grew out of the previous Loon project, which used balloons to provide internet coverage. However, due to environmental concerns and difficulties in maintaining signal stability, the Loon project was discontinued in 2021. Taara has eliminated these shortcomings, while maintaining the main principle of data transmission using lasers.

Despite its promise, laser networks have certain limitations: weather conditions, dust and tall buildings can negatively affect signal quality. Therefore, Taara is unlikely to be able to completely replace fiber optics, but it has every chance of becoming an important alternative for those regions where it is difficult to lay wires. The competition between Taara, Starlink and Amazon Kuiper will determine the future of global internet access.
