Apple has reminded Apple Watch owners that the smartwatch’s water resistance is not permanent. Over time, the seals and adhesive components naturally wear down, meaning even a watch that has handled years of swimming without issues may eventually fail after being exposed to water.
The renewed discussion was sparked by a Reddit user who reported that their Apple Watch Series 7 stopped working after just five minutes in a swimming pool. According to the owner, the watch had been used for swimming for several years without any issues, but this time it never turned back on.

The user said they learned “the hard way” that water resistance does not last forever. As the materials inside the watch naturally age, the device gradually becomes less resistant to water. They advised owners of older Apple Watch models not to rely on their watches’ water resistance as confidently as they once did.
Apple itself clearly states that the Apple Watch is water-resistant, not waterproof. The company warns that water resistance deteriorates over time and that there is no way to re-test or restore the watch’s original seal once it has degraded.
The condition of the seals can also be affected by drops, impacts, exposure to soap, perfumes, sunscreen, insect repellent, oils, and other chemicals. High-pressure water and steam can also damage the protective seals. If the watch comes into contact with these substances, Apple recommends rinsing it with clean, warm water and drying it with a lint-free cloth.
There is no way to determine exactly how long an Apple Watch will maintain its water resistance. Some users report that their watches have survived years of swimming without problems, while others have experienced water damage after only a few immersions. Some owners believe that after about three years of use, it is safer to avoid fully submerging the device.
Apple Watch water resistance relies on rubber seals, specialized adhesives, and the watch’s sealed enclosure. Over time, these materials naturally degrade, increasing the risk of water entering the device. Most Apple Watch Series 2 and newer models are rated for water resistance up to 50 meters, while Apple Watch Ultra models are rated up to 100 meters. However, these ratings do not mean the watch will maintain the same level of protection throughout its entire lifespan.
If your Apple Watch is several years old, it is worth keeping in mind that its water resistance may have diminished. Even without visible damage, an older device may no longer provide the same level of water protection it offered when it was new.
