The Australian government has imposed financial sanctions on the neo-Nazi extremist group Terrorgram Collective, banning its assets and public interaction. This is the first time the Australian government has imposed sanctions on an organization that operates solely online.

Terrorgram has been around since around 2017 and operates primarily on the Telegram platform, spreading white supremacist ideology and calling for violent actions. The US government designated the group a terrorist organization in January 2025, and the UK also officially banned the group in early 2024. According to Australian authorities, the sanctions make providing financial and resource support to Terrorgram a criminal offense, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

In September 2024, the US Department of Justice found the group guilty of directing, inciting racial hatred and providing instructions for making explosives in the United States, as well as organizing an attack on a mosque in Turkey and a shooting outside an LGBT bar in Slovakia. two men were charged with providing instructions for making explosives.

Australia’s sanctions are another step in the global fight against online terrorism and extremist groups that use digital platforms to coordinate attacks. The measures are expected to make it more difficult for such networks to operate and reduce their impact on radicalizing young people.
