Four members of the REvil gang were sentenced to prison in Russia

Four members of the hacking group REvil have been sentenced to prison in Russia on charges of cybercrime and money laundering, according to a court decision in St. Petersburg.

The court announced the sentences of four members of REvil: Artem Zaits received 4.5 years of imprisonment, Oleksiy Malozemov – 5 years, Ruslan Khansyarov and Daniil Puzyrevskyi – 5.5 and 6 years, respectively. Puzyrevsky, recognized as the leader of the group, may face an additional fine. The sentences were announced after military prosecutors called for the maximum sentence of up to 6.5 years in prison.

  • The investigation against REvil began after the 2022 arrests orchestrated by Russian authorities with the support of the US. During the searches, more than 426 million rubles, 600 thousand US dollars, 500 thousand euros, cryptocurrency wallets, computers and several cars were seized. The operation against REvil was prompted in part by a conversation between Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, in which Biden emphasized the need to respond to cyberattacks linked to the group.

REvil, known for hacking big companies like JBS and Kaseya. Since then, the legal process against the members of the group has been ongoing. In addition to these sentences, other cybercrime cases related to the group’s activities are also pending.
