YouTube vlogger Marques Brownlee’s (MKBHD) new Panels app has been criticized for security breaches and high price. All of the app’s wallpapers are available for free, and the app itself has drawn ire due to numerous intrusive permissions and privacy issues.
YouTube vlogger Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has launched a new app called Panels that gives users access to high-quality wallpapers from digital artists. However, the application soon faced a wave of criticism. Users complained about excessive permissions, including activity tracking and access to location data. Critics also pointed to the poor design of the application and the rather high cost of an annual subscription – 49.99$. They also discovered that all the app’s wallpapers are stored in the public domain and can be downloaded for free. One security researcher even created a script that automatically collects wallpapers from the app.
MKBHD is known for its reviews of technological innovations and has close to 20 million subscribers. The Panels app was introduced as a new tool for accessing unique wallpapers, but soon users began to complain due to privacy concerns and high prices. Brownlee apologized and promised to fix the problem of excessive data collection permissions.
The Panels application turned out to be not only too expensive, but also dangerous for users due to the lack of adequate data protection. Brownlee is currently working on a fix for this issue, but the app continues to receive criticism from users.
