On August 12, 2024, the FBI announced the successful takedown of the international Radar/Dispossessor ransomware group, which carried out cybercrimes under the alias “Brain”. During the operation, servers and domains belonging to the criminal group were dismantled.

Founded in August 2023, the Radar/Dispossessor group has quickly become a threat to small and medium-sized businesses in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, education, healthcare, and finance. The FBI identified 43 companies that were victims of this group, which included businesses from various countries such as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Argentina, Australia, and others. Criminals used ransomware to encrypt data and demanded a ransom for its recovery, often threatening to release the stolen data.

Radar/Dispossessor used vulnerabilities in computer systems, weak passwords, and lack of two-factor authentication to gain access to victims’ systems. After gaining administrator rights, attackers encrypted data and pressured victims for ransom. If the ransom was not paid, the group threatened to publicly release the data on specially created leak pages.

The elimination of the Radar/Dispossessor group is a significant success in the fight against cybercrime. The FBI urges anyone with information about this group to contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center. The investigation was carried out in cooperation with law enforcement agencies of Great Britain, Germany and the United States.
