GiThub CEO Thomas Domke has announced his resignation, saying he is returning to his “startup roots.” The Microsoft-owned platform is now being further integrated into a new CoreAI unit that oversees the development of GitHub Copilot.

Domke, who has led GitHub since 2021, will remain in his position until the end of 2025, after which he plans to return to founding his own project. In his blog, he emphasized his pride in the company’s achievements as a remote-first organization and confirmed that GitHub will continue its mission as part of CoreAI, under the leadership of Jay Pareek.
Microsoft will not appoint a new CEO for GitHub, but instead the platform will operate directly within CoreAI. This unit unites a number of Microsoft teams and is responsible for artificial intelligence-based innovations, including the development of GitHub Copilot.
Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for 7.5 billion $ in stock. Prior to that, Domke sold the company his startup HockeyApp, a service for beta testing mobile apps and collecting crash reports, which was later integrated into the Visual Studio App Center.
During his leadership, GitHub grew to more than 1 billion repositories and forks and more than 150 million developers. Domke also worked with former CEO Nat Friedman during the integration of the company into the Microsoft ecosystem.
Thomas Domke’s departure marks a new stage for GitHub, which is increasingly closely linked to artificial intelligence and Microsoft’s corporate strategy. Integration into CoreAI could accelerate the development of developer tools, but also increases the platform’s dependence on the corporation’s internal ecosystem.
