Global police operation First World 2024 has successfully targeted online fraud networks, freezing thousands of bank accounts and seizing assets worth US$257 million.

The operation covered 61 countries and is aimed at combating phishing, investment fraud, fake online stores, romance fraud and impersonation fraud. As a result, 3,950 suspects were arrested and 14,643 potential suspects were identified. Police seized about $135 million in fiat currency and $2 million in cryptocurrency. In addition, other assets worth more than $120 million were confiscated, including real estate, luxury cars, expensive jewelry and other valuable items.

Operation First World has been coordinated by Interpol since 2014 to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against fraud in the field of telecommunications and social engineering. In 2024, the operation was funded by China’s Ministry of Public Security, which held a final meeting in Tianjin to analyze the results and plan future operations.

The Director of Interpol’s Financial Crimes and Corruption Centre, Dr Isaac Kehinde Oginni, said the results of this operation reflected lives protected, crimes prevented and global economic security strengthened. The efforts of the international community made it possible to deal a significant blow to transnational organized criminal groups that pose a serious threat to global security.
