Snapchat has announced new features to combat sexting, including enhanced in-app warnings, improved friending protection and blocking capabilities. Snap, the owner of the company, introduced new measures to protect users from sex blackmail, including enhanced warnings in the app, improved protection against adding to the friend list and enhanced blocking capabilities. The new features aim to prevent scammers from contacting teenagers and raise awareness of these scams.
Last year, the number of confirmed cases of sexual blackmail in the US more than doubled to 26,700, and there were 27 deaths related to these crimes, according to the BBC. Due to the sensitive nature of these crimes, many of them were not registered.
To address the problem of sex blackmail, Snapchat last year introduced pop-up warnings when teenagers received messages from unknown individuals. Now the company is expanding these capabilities by adding new signals. Teens will receive a warning if the chat is from a blocked user, a complained user, or a user from another region.
Additional measures include enhanced friend protection, which prevents friend requests from unfriended individuals or individuals with a history of accessing the social network from locations often associated with fraudulent activity, such as Nigeria.
Snap will also send all users regular reminders to check their account security and privacy settings, and will make it easier for users to choose who can see their location. Additionally, the company has implemented advanced blocking that will block new friend requests sent from other accounts created on the same device.
