Hackers impersonate customer service agents in new phishing scam

Hackers have come up with a new phishing scheme, posing as online chat agents for companies like Etsy and Upwork to trick victims into handing over their credit card and bank details.

Cybersecurity firm Perception Point has discovered a new phishing campaign in which hackers are using fake customer service agent accounts to trick users. The uniqueness of this scam is that the attackers interact with the victims in real time, rather than using canned responses from bots. They create fake web pages identical to the original payment pages and convince victims to enter their bank details.

After entering the details, the fake pages will display an error message and then the victim will be directed to a fake chat support page. There, a live agent pretending to be a support service forces victims to provide even more confidential information. This scheme is mainly aimed at small business owners and freelancers using platforms such as Etsy and Upwork.

Phishing attacks are becoming more sophisticated and dangerous, using new technologies such as artificial intelligence to trick users. Users should pay particular attention to support messages and always check website URLs for misspellings or incorrect syntax. Perception Point emphasizes the importance of verifying the authenticity of support messages and avoiding clicking on unsolicited links or QR codes. Users are encouraged to always use multi-factor authentication and be aware of the latest phishing techniques.
