The hackers claiming responsibility for the hack are sharing their claims about the breach online and have started publishing what they say is the stolen data.

Hackers made a post announcing the alleged breach (the hacking) on a well-known data leak forum where cyber hackers typically share stolen databases with each other. According to the hackers, the stolen data includes customer email addresses, client ID’s, bank account numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and other personal information.

The hackers have posted screenshots of some of the allegedly stolen data on social media platform X to prove they have access to it. They say the information is coming from TotalEnergies’ French version of its website that customers use when registering for energy services.

Researchers from Cyber News analyzed the hackers’ claims and pointed out that only a few hundred records were shown as evidence and most times hackers claim to have access to millions or hundreds of millions of records. It can’t be verified if the leaked information is real because we don’t have an independent way of verifying it.

HawkSec said it is responsible for a couple of big hacks recently, including an alleged data hack on Discord and an alleged data hack on Orange Rwanda. Neither of those companies has acknowledged either of the hacks.

While TotalEnergies has not confirmed the hack, it is another example of how serious of a problem it is to expose a lot of your customers’ data. If the hack is true, customers who had their information stolen may see an increase in phishing scams, identity theft and financial fraud attempts.
