The largest US water company, American Water Works, was forced to suspend its customer portal after a cyber attack last week.
American Water Works reported a breach of its systems on October 3, 2024. Although water operations were not affected, the company shut down some IT systems to minimize damage. The MyWater customer portal is temporarily unavailable, meaning billing has stopped until further notice. The company also said its call center will operate with limited functionality while the portal remains offline.
American Water Works is the largest water and wastewater provider in the United States, serving more than 14 million people in 24 states. Other water systems have also come under attack in the past, with Iranian hackers hacking water treatment plants in Pennsylvania.
The company assured that no personal data of customers has been affected yet. It cooperates with law enforcement agencies and involved specialists to investigate and strengthen cyber security.
