A cyber attack on a Dutch technical university paralyzed the educational process

RIDD Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), one of Europe’s leading technical universities, has suffered a massive cyber attack that has completely disabled its network and forced thousands of students to cancel classes.

The cyber attack paralyzed all network services of the university, which made educational and administrative processes impossible. Students and staff lost access to email, Wi-Fi, Teams and Canvas. Even the parking system failed, leaving the barriers open. Although coffee machines were available, the cafeteria stopped serving food because the cash registers were not working. The university’s IT department detected suspicious activity on the servers Saturday night and decided to shut down the network to prevent further intrusions.

Cyber attacks on educational institutions are becoming more common because their servers store large amounts of personal data and valuable intellectual property, and TU/e’s ties to ASML, one of the world’s leading microchip manufacturers, make it an attractive target for hackers. With around 13,000 students and 4,000 employees, it ranks seventh among European universities of technology.

Although there is no evidence of data theft, students and staff have been warned about possible phishing attacks. The incident demonstrates the need to improve cyber security at institutions that remain vulnerable to hacker attacks.
