Police in nine countries have successfully dismantled the Ghost messaging app, which was used to support organized crime.
The application for encrypted communications “Ghost”, which was used by criminals to avoid the attention of law enforcement agencies, was destroyed as a result of an international operation involving nine countries. The European Criminal Police Organization (Europol) together with law enforcement agencies of Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA conducted a large-scale operation and arrested 51 people. Ghosting has contributed to illegal drug sales, money laundering and violence. The app used three encryption standards, allowing users to self-destruct messages. As a result of this operation, a drug laboratory was destroyed and several life-threatening situations were prevented.
Ghosting has become popular among criminal gangs due to its anonymity and ability to avoid the attention of law enforcement. Its users included members of mafia organizations and international criminal groups who used the app to coordinate their criminal activities.
The takedown of Ghost was an important victory in the fight against organized crime, demonstrating that even the most advanced encryption cannot protect you from international law enforcement operations.
