Gumi City Council in South Korea said their chief administrative robot may have committed suicide after falling six and a half feet down a flight of stairs on June 26.
The robot, made by California-based startup Bear Robotics, was appointed as a City Council employee in August 2023. He performed administrative tasks such as delivering documents, promoting the city and providing information. The robot could move independently between floors using an elevator. Prior to the incident, the robot was seen “circling in one place as if something was there”, raising suspicions about its possible “depressed” state. Local authorities have launched an investigation, collecting and analyzing the robot’s parts to determine the cause of its death.
Bear Robotics is known for its robots serving restaurants. South Korea is a leader in the adoption of robotics, with the world’s highest robot density – one industrial robot for every ten human workers. This case was unexpected and shocking even for a country that actively uses robots in various fields.
Currently, the Gumi City Council does not plan to replace the robot with another analogue. The incident raises the question of work stress even for robots, with news headlines already speculating whether the robot committed suicide due to “work stress.”
