Police in Sweden and Finland jointly dismantled the criminal marketplace Sipulitie, which operated on the darknet and was used to trade drugs and other illegal goods in Scandinavia. During the operation, the platform’s servers were confiscated, and the site itself was closed. The investigation is ongoing.
Together with Europol, the Sipulitie marketplace, which operated on the darknet and specialized in the trade of drugs and other illegal goods in Scandinavia, was eliminated. The marketplace was launched in February 2023 on the Tor platform, initially targeting Finland and later expanding to other Scandinavian countries.
During the investigation, it was possible to establish the identity of the site administrator and moderators, as well as identify people who sold and bought goods on the platform. During the operation, the servers were removed and the site was closed.
Sipulitie was created on the basis of a predecessor that had been operating since 2019 and was liquidated in December 2020 with the participation of the Polish and Finnish authorities. This marketplace collected millions in profits from the sale of drugs and illegal goods in Scandinavia, conducting transactions in cryptocurrency and in English and Finnish.
According to Finnish police chief Hanna Sinkkonen, the takedown of Sipulitie is an important step in the fight against cybercrime on the darknet, as it shows that even hidden platforms are not safe for criminals.
