Starbucks has announced the large-scale deployment of its NomadGo Inventory AI system in more than 11,000 coffee shops in North America. The artificial intelligence uses computer vision and AR to automate inventory counts and reduce time spent on routine checks.

The AI works on common barista devicessmartphones and tablets. Just point the camera at shelves, refrigerators or display cases, and the system instantly recognizes products — from milk to coffee beans. According to Starbucks, automation allows you to take inventory eight times faster and with 99% accuracy. This saves hours of daily checks and reduces the number of write-offs, as baristas see the actual balance in real time. In addition, the AI works locally without a constant internet connection, which is important for busy coffee shops with unstable WiFi.

Inventory has always been a “pain point” in the catering industry, forcing staff to work overtime. Now the company presents AI as a technology that does not replace people, but frees them up for more “human” tasks — making coffee and communicating with customers. Combined with other digital initiatives, including staff automation and even experiments with 3D-printing interiors, Starbucks is betting on long-term efficiency and improving the quality of service. At the same time, the company is facing a decline in attendance: the number of customers in coffee shops has decreased for the sixth consecutive quarter.

NomadGo’s use of AI demonstrates that even simple processes like inventory can become a key factor of competitive advantage. Technology helps reduce costs, minimize waste and free up staff to work with guests. For Starbucks, this is an important step in overcoming the attendance crisis and forming the image of a technology-oriented coffee chain.
