TikTok has blocked dozens of Russian propaganda accounts following new US sanctions aimed at Russian media outlets that spread disinformation.
Social network TikTok has blocked around 40 accounts linked to Russian media outlets such as Sputnik and RT amid new US sanctions aimed at combating Russian disinformation. The sanctions also apply to the media group “Russia Today” and its director Dmytro Kiselyov, who is accused of spreading Kremlin propaganda and interfering in the internal affairs of other states. It became part of a large-scale diplomatic campaign by the US, Great Britain and Canada against the Russian media.
The US imposed new sanctions on Russian media after RT and other organizations were found not only to spread propaganda, but also to participate in cyber operations and covert information campaigns closely linked to Russian intelligence services. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken confirmed that Russia uses these media as part of its military machine.
The blocking of Russian TikTok accounts is another step in the fight against disinformation and cyber operations supported by the Russian state.
