Ohio Tesla owner Craig Doty II shared a disturbing video of his car missing a passing train and crashing into a gate while using Self-Driving (FSD) mode.

Craig Doty II said this is the second time his Tesla has attempted to collide with a train at various level crossings in FSD mode. The most recent incident occurred on May 8, 2024, and the video from the recorder shows the car making a sharp turn at the last moment and crashing into the gate. Doty noted that his car would not slow down when approaching a passing train, and he began searching the Tesla Motors Club forums for answers.

Doty noted that the FSD system did not recognize the train and he had to intervene urgently. The driver noted that normally the FSD system is more careful than the average driver, but this case highlights the need to always be careful behind the wheel, even when using advanced technology.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system after multiple crashes. It appeared that in many cases the drivers were not sufficiently involved in the driving process and the warnings provided by the autopilot did not always ensure that the drivers were paying enough attention to the road. Tesla drivers using FSD must always be ready to take control at any time.
