Atlanta’s popular Circle K convenience store chain has fallen victim to a cyber attack by Hunters International, which claims to have stolen 55.6 gigabytes of company data.
The group Hunters International appeared on the cybercrime scene after one of the most dangerous ransomware groups, Hive, disappeared after the intervention of the FBI. According to Bitdefender, the leaders of Hive have ceased operations and transferred assets to another group.
Earlier this week, the ransomware group Hunters International claimed to have stolen 55.6 gigabytes of data from the Circle K Atlanta chain of stores. The affected company was mentioned on the group’s dark web blog, where they post details of their latest victims. According to the report, the attackers gained access to nearly three gigabytes of data about current employees. For example, a low-quality image shows a copy of a passport.
Circle K Atlanta, which has more than 30 locations in the city of Atlanta, has not yet issued an official response to the incident. Attackers usually publicly announce attacks to force organizations to pay the ransom.
Hunters International continues to operate using a code similar to that used by the Hive group. As of October 2023, after the disappearance of Hive, Hunters International has been active and has already hit at least 128 organizations. Attacks on chains as large as Circle K Atlanta highlight the importance of strengthening cybersecurity.
