In Great Britain, a 17-year-old boy from Walsall has been arrested in connection with attacks on large organizations, including MGM Resorts, in order to demand ransom.
The arrest was carried out on July 18 with the participation of the UK National Criminal Agency (NCA) and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The suspect was detained on suspicion of violating the Computer Misuse Act. An unknown number of “digital devices” were seized during the arrest. The arrests are part of a global investigation into the activities of a massive hacking community that has targeted several major companies, including MGM Resorts in the US, authorities said.
Last year, hacker attacks took down systems at all 31 MGM resorts, forcing Caesars to pay hackers millions of dollars to avoid a similar fate. Hacking groups ALPHV and Scattered Spider are believed to be behind these attacks. In June of this year, a 22-year-old British citizen was arrested in Spain on suspicion of involvement in the attack on MGM Resorts International.
Attacks like those at MGM Resorts and Caesars show just how serious cybercrime can be. The arrest of the 17-year-old hacker is an important step in the fight against cybercrime. Authorities are seeking to bring to justice all members of a global hacking group that is causing significant damage to major companies around the world.
