US-based DoorDash buys UK rival Deliveroo for 3.9bn $

The DoorDash offer, announced in April, has been accepted by Deliveroo. The merger would be a strategic move for DoorDash, strengthening its position in the European market, as the British company works with around 176,000 restaurants and retailers in nine countries, including France, Belgium, Italy and the UK. DoorDash confirmed the offer was final, with the possibility of increasing it if an interested third party emerges.

  • San Francisco-based DoorDash previously made a similar move when it acquired Finnish company Wolt for $8bn in 2021, significantly expanding its operations in Northern Europe and the Baltics. After the acquisition of Deliveroo, DoorDash will be present in more than 40 countries, serving an audience of over 1 billion people.
  • Deliveroo, founded in 2013 and based in London, has around seven million monthly active users. However, since going public on the London Stock Exchange in 2021, the company has struggled to turn a profit. DoorDash, on the other hand, is actively expanding its operations in new markets and strengthening its position in Europe after acquiring Wolt.

The merger of DoorDash and Deliveroo will create one of the largest players in the European food delivery market. It will also give DoorDash a strategic competitive advantage by expanding its geographical reach and strengthening its local expertise.
