Critical Services Affected NYBCe, one of the largest independent blood donation centers in the United States, was attacked on January 26, 2025. The center said it shut down its IT systems shortly after detecting suspicious activity to prevent further threats. Cybersecurity experts confirmed the incident was caused by ransomware; all 10 departments of NYBCe, which supplies blood and medicines to more than 600 hospitals in 45 countries, were affected.
The center is working to restore operations, maintaining contact with medical institutions and using temporary solutions to fulfill orders. However, the attack slowed the processing of blood donors, forcing some blood donation centers to postpone their work hours. NYBCe and New Jersey Blood Service recently announced a blood donor shortage due to the cold weather, and this attack comes at a critical time. The organizations are urging local residents to continue donating blood despite potential delays in the process.
