OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT feature that allows the AI agent to work with Apple Messages. The new feature, implemented as an Apple Messages plugin, is available to ChatGPT users on macOS who use the desktop app.
Once enabled, ChatGPT can read, compose, and send text messages through Apple Messages. It can also review conversations to generate brief summaries or find specific information within message threads.
However, “this does not let you interact with ChatGPT remotely through Messages, and it does not work in regular ChatGPT chats,” OpenAI said. The company said the Messages plugin is available in ChatGPT Work, its AI-powered productivity agent, as well as in Code.
The feature only works after the user grants ChatGPT permission to read messages and recipient information. OpenAI also noted that Apple Messages runs directly on the user’s Mac and is “not available directly in ChatGPT on the web or mobile, Codex CLI, or the IDE extension.”
“Does OpenAI have some kind of deal with Apple? Do all ChatGPT users and employees use iOS? […] iOS gets so much love while Android is so far behind,” one X user wrote, pointing out that the company has not released these features for Android users.
“Still no Windows? With all this compute and progress, you’d think we’d have reached the point of simultaneous releases by now. What needs to happen to achieve that level of continuous improvement?” another user added.
OpenAI also recently introduced another feature for Mac users called Computer History. It tracks a user’s activity on their device and provides insights into their habits, helping them, for example, find the task they were last working on or turn repetitive tasks into “skills” or “automations.”
While some users were disappointed that the new feature is available only within the Apple ecosystem, others raised concerns about privacy.
“One crazy privacy aspect that nobody here is talking about yet: the labs will now be scanning all of your personal messages. Group chats from 10 years ago, private text messages, things you thought were private when you sent them,” one user wrote.
In this particular case, however, the company says that no information leaves the device and that ChatGPT can access messages only after the user grants the necessary permissions. Despite this, Reddit users say they feel ChatGPT is becoming increasingly eager to gain access to other personal services.
“Now I regularly get pop-ups in ChatGPT asking me to link my bank account,” one Reddit user wrote.
