California Cheater Fined 175,000 $ and Banned from Fortnite for Life

Epic Games has won a lawsuit against a California cheater — player Sebastian Araujo, who violated the rules in more than 830 Fortnite tournaments, must pay more than $ 175,000 in fines and received a lifetime ban. This is the most high-profile example of legal prosecution for cheating in the esports industry.

  • According to IGN, Araujo earned about $ 6,850 using HWID spoofing — a program that masks the hardware identifiers of a device, allowing it to bypass Fortnite’s anti-cheat system.

Epic Games counted 839 copyright violations ($ 200 for each), which gave rise to a $ 167,800 fine, plus court costs. In addition, the company demanded another $ 100,000 in compensation, but the court found this excessive. However, the total amount is still 25 times the player’s winnings.

The investigation proved that Araujo repeatedly created fake accounts, hid his activities and ignored the legal process. His technical approach allowed him to repeatedly enter the same tournaments, pretending to be a different person, and win unfairly.

Fortnite is not just a game, but also a multi-million e-sports environment. In recent years, Epic Games has organized hundreds of tournaments with cash prizes. In response to a wave of fraud, the studio has invested in anti-cheat and legal mechanisms, and this case has become clear evidence that the company is ready to go to court to protect the integrity of the game.

This precedent is a signal to all e-sportsmen: even a small win obtained through deception can turn into bankruptcy, a lawsuit and a ban for life. Epic Games has shown that it is ready to defend fair rules of the game not only technologically, but also legally.
