On Monday, March 5, 2024, former US military aviator Jack Teixeira was sentenced to 16 years in prison for leaking US military secrets to a Discord chat group in an attempt to impress fellow gamers.
Teixeira, a 22-year-old resident of North Dayton, Mass., was arrested by the FBI last April after revelations that he had distributed top-secret documents related to Ukraine’s air defenses, troop movements during the Russian invasion and Israel’s Mossad spy service. He faced up to ten years in prison for each of the six charges.
After pleading guilty to all charges, Teixeira agreed to a deal with investigators, according to which he was sentenced to 200 months in prison. The US Department of Justice said it would accept a sentence in the range of 132 to 200 months. After serving the term, he also faces three years of supervised release and a $50,000 fine, which can be waived by the court if the defendant is financially insolvent.
The Teixeira case came under intense scrutiny because of its implications for US national security and showed the seriousness of the deliberate misuse of access to classified information. The case sparked a wide-ranging discussion about the need to strengthen controls over the distribution of sensitive data and respond to internal security threats.
