The US Department of Justice has officially announced the successful completion of Operation Greyskull, a large-scale special operation that led to the liquidation of four darknet sites that were distributing child sexual content. The case has already resulted in 18 convictions, with a total of more than 300 years in prison. One of the convicted is a site moderator who taught others how to avoid detection by the police.

Operation Greyskull is considered one of the most powerful strikes against child exploitation networks in the digital underground. According to the FBI, the arrested people managed sites that hosted not only photos and videos of children, but also separate sections dedicated to babies, violence, sadism and torture.

A 52-year-old man from Minnesota was sentenced to 20 years. He performed the functions of a moderator: he taught others how to post content without the risk of detection, coordinated posts and supervised the “rules”. Another eight convicts operated through the Southern District of Florida, where the main site was located.

  • The court found that some of the criminals maintained the infrastructure, paid for the servers, held online meetings, and kept logs of the posted materials. Some of them were charged with separate charges – with participation in an organized criminal organization specializing in the sexual exploitation of children.

  • Operation Greyskull is part of Project Safe Childhood, launched by the US Department of Justice back in 2006. The main goal is to combat online child exploitation.

International partners also participated in this operation – arrests were made in the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Estonia, Belgium, and South Africa.

The defendants were arrested in various US states, including Alabama, Nevada, North Carolina, Maryland, Texas, and others. The amount of compensation to the victims varies from 7,500 to 174,500 dollars. At least two of the defendants in the case died before the indictment was filed.

Operation Greyskull demonstrated that even the darkest corners of the darknet do not guarantee anonymity. Thanks to technical monitoring, international coordination and legal support, it was possible to stop the most heinous platforms with child abuse and bring those behind them to justice. This is a powerful message: impunity in cyberspace does not work.
