The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States has offered a 10 million $ reward for information leading to the identification of the Salt Typhoon group, which is involved in attacks on US telecommunications networks and the US Treasury Department.

  • The attackers have gained access to phone call records, including those of former President Donald Trump and members of Kamala Harris’ campaign ahead of the 2024 election. The illegal access also included court requests and personal correspondence.
  • Salt Typhoon came to the attention of the US government back in 2020, when it was first discovered that critical infrastructure was being compromised, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Lumen Technologies. According to the FBI, the Chinese hackers penetrated the systems extremely deeply, and may still be there today.

The FBI is interested in any information that will help identify the participants or expose their illegal activities, particularly in the telecommunications sector. Salt Typhoon is a national security threat associated with the Chinese government, which has alternative names GhostEmperor and FamousSparrow. The hackers have been operating in secret, using advanced anti-forensics technologies for a long time.

At the same time, the US State Department announced a 10 million $ reward for information on any cybercriminals working for foreign governments and targeting US critical infrastructure.

Salt Typhoon continues to be one of the most dangerous cyber threats to the US. Despite repeated denials from China, the FBI and the State Department are actively working to identify and eliminate the threat, appealing to the public for assistance in the investigation.
