Spanish police have arrested hackers involved in more than 40 attacks on government and military organizations, including NATO and US forces. The arrests were made in the city of Calpe, Alicante, after a months-long investigation.
They carried out a series of attacks on Spanish and international organizations, gaining access to databases of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the Civil Guard, the Royal Mint, Spanish universities, NATO and US armed forces. Police were able to identify him after cyberattacks on Spanish security services. The hacker operated under various aliases, posted stolen data on dubious forums and used advanced anonymization techniques to cover his tracks. During the search, cryptocurrency assets and computer equipment were seized from him, which could become additional evidence.
Police began their investigation in February 2024 after a business association in Madrid reported the data theft. Since then, the attackers have continued their attacks, hacking into the systems of major government organizations. The hacker also posted data from the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization on BreachForums under the nickname “natohub”.
The arrest of the perpetrator is an important step in the fight against cybercrime. This case shows that even the most sophisticated hackers using anonymous networks and cryptocurrencies can be exposed by law enforcement. Spain will continue to strengthen its cybersecurity measures and cooperate with international organizations to combat threats in cyberspace.
