Italian police have arrested suspects in cases of unauthorized access to government databases and are investigating dozens of other people, including the son of Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, the founder of Luxottica.

According to information, the suspects detained in the case used the data for blackmail or selling information to customers. The investigation, which covers the activities of a private information company run by a former police officer, revealed that the attacker had access to three main databases, including information about suspicious financial transactions, bank transactions, income declarations and police investigations. Investigators from the Milan prosecutor’s office claim that from 2019 to 2024, illegal access to information was systematic.

Among the defendants in this case is Leonardo Maria del Vecchio, the son of the late billionaire founder of Luxottica. Del Vecchio’s lawyer said that his client has nothing to do with this event and is actively waiting for the completion of the investigation to prove his innocence. According to prosecutor Giovanni Melillo, the investigation drew attention because Italy’s National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office expressed concern about the growth of a “huge market for confidential information” in systematic operations.

This case has drawn increased attention to the risk of illegal circulation of classified information, especially reminiscent of the recent investigation in the banking sector of Intesa Sanpaolo. This investigation is aimed not only at establishing the exact scope and method of access to the data, but also at bringing the organizers and illegal customers to justice.
