A 59-year-old IT expert from Florida was sentenced to 4 years in prison for cooperating with Chinese intelligence services by passing classified information about cyber security, Chinese dissidents and corporate hacking attacks.

Ping Li, a former Verizon and Infosys employee, pleaded guilty to conspiring to cooperate with China’s Ministry of National Security (MSS). Since 2012, Mr. Li has been sending information about Chinese dissidents, the Falun Gong movement, data on cyber attacks, especially the 2021 SolarWinds hack.

Using anonymous Gmail and Yahoo accounts, Li gave MSS information about hacking attacks on American companies, his employer’s internal cybersecurity materials, and even the biographical data of Chinese dissidents in the United States. In 2021, he provided MSS with information about the hacking of American companies, and in 2022, about a Falun Gong practitioner in Florida.

Mr. Li was arrested in 2024 on May 7, and evidence provided to him by prosecutors (including copies of emails with Chinese agents) forced him to plead guilty. After 4 years in prison, he will be supervised for 3 years and pay a fine of 250,000 euros.

Hacking campaigns organized by MSS continue to threaten the security of American companies and their employees, forcing the United States to strengthen cyber defense measures.
