Former Trenchant (L3Harris) director Peter Williams is accused of stealing seven trade secrets and attempting to sell them to a buyer in Russia. According to the prosecutor’s office, the episode lasted from April 2022 to June 2025; the offense is demanding forfeiture of property and restitution of $ 1.3 million

US federal prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against Peter Williams, who is being charged with two counts of theft of trade secrets. According to the documents, Williams, while working as a director and general manager of the Trenchant cyber division – the L3Harris division that deals with cyberspace operations and vulnerability research – allegedly copied and transferred seven classified files to two companies with the intention of selling them outside the United States, including to a Russian buyer. Court documents do not disclose the contents of the secrets. In addition to the criminal charges, the government is seeking the forfeiture of a wide range of assets: a Washington home, 22 watches, luxury brand items and cryptocurrency accounts. L3Harris and Trenchant have not yet been charged; the companies declined to comment.

Trenchant is a division of L3Harris that specializes in intelligence, exploit development and national security solutions; many of its developments are non-public and are designed to work with government clients. Areas of activity include vulnerability research, computer operations tools and endpoint solutions. Given the nature of the products — potentially “cyber weapons” and exploits — the theft of such materials poses an increased national security risk if they end up in the hands of hostile actors.

Insider cases in the defense and cyber solutions sectors highlight two systemic problems:

  1. the risks of access controls and internal reviews at companies that work with sensitive materials;

  2. Global geopolitical implications: Leakage of such technologies could accelerate the development of threat capabilities in hostile jurisdictions. Even without the details of the stolen files, this incident is a reminder that access audits, data retention policies, and export control procedures at defense technology suppliers need to be strengthened.
