Maxar is developing next-generation navigation without GPS

Maxar, known for its satellite imagery, is developing an innovative 3D navigation technology that uses 3D maps instead of GPS for precise positioning. Such a system could become an important alternative for aviation and military operations, especially in conditions where GPS signals are susceptible to jamming.

A new tool called Pinpoint based on the Precision3D Registration (P3DR) system. The technology uses a detailed 3D map of the Earth with an accuracy of up to 50 cm and allows navigation by comparing sensor data with a high-precision 3D map in real time. This allows the tool to be used even in the absence of GPS, which is especially important for military missions and to avoid obstacles on the way. Pinpoint works with both real-time video and single images and can provide automatic comparison with a 3D Earth model.

Peter Wilczynski, director of manufacturing at Maxar, said the approach is similar to stargazing, which ancient mariners used to navigate. The system includes a “reliability measure” that indicates the accuracy of image quality, especially when poor weather conditions such as clouds cause poor image quality.

In recent years, new challenges have appeared in the field of navigation technologies. In particular, GPS is vulnerable to attacks and jamming, creating a need for more autonomous and reliable alternative solutions, and Maxar plans to bring Pinpoint to the wider market next year after completing several pilot programs. Maxar’s innovative developments are essential for navigation in harsh environments where GPS is vulnerable.
