Meta is introducing new ways to combat fraud and help users regain access to compromised accounts. The company is testing facial recognition technology to detect fraudulent advertising and quickly restore access to hacked accounts using selfie videos.

  1. Meta continues to strengthen the protection of users on its platform by testing new ways to combat fraud. The company focuses on using facial recognition technology to detect “celebrity ads” that deceive users. If the system determines that an ad using a celebrity’s image is potentially fraudulent, Meta compares the face in the ad to a public photo of that person from Facebook or Instagram. If they match and the ad is considered fraudulent, it is blocked and the face data is removed.
  2. Meta is also testing video selfie technology to verify the identity of users who have lost access to their accounts due to fraud or forgotten passwords. Users can upload a video of the selfie, which is then compared to the image in their account. This feature has already been tested and is more secure than traditional document-based recovery methods.

Fraudsters continue to develop their tactics by using images of public figures to lure users to fake advertisements and websites, and Meta is working on improving its systems to automatically detect such fraud and is actively testing new technologies to do so. Face recognition technology will allow faster and more accurate detection of fraudulent advertising and will enable users to quickly restore access to their accounts.
