Kremlin-backed Russian media company Rybar is under scrutiny by the US government for its ties to Yevgeny Prigozhin and attempts to influence the 2024 US election.

  • According to the US State Department, Rybar is a Russian media company with 1.3 million followers on Telegram that actively promotes the interests of the Kremlin through use of social media. Previously, Rybar was financed by the business empire of Yevgeny Prigozhin, known for his information campaign and troll factory that sabotaged the 2016 US elections. After Prigozhin’s death, Rybar continued to receive funding through a contract with Russian defense giant Rostec.
  • In particular, Rybar used the X platform (formerly Twitter) to focus on the issue of illegal immigration on the Texas border, influencing the US political landscape. The State Department accused the competitors of trying to “sow seeds of discord and incite violence and social division” in American society. It is also reported that Rybar receives support from Rostec, which works closely with the Kremlin and is under sanctions by the US Treasury Department.

The US has announced a reward for information on who is behind its competitors and continues to impose sanctions on Russian media outlets implicated in US meddling in their internal affairs.
