Meta has announced a major crackdown on online fraud, disabling more than **150,000 accounts** connected to scam centers operating across Southeast Asia. The operation was carried out in cooperation with law enforcement agencies from several countries and has already resulted in **21 arrests in Thailand**.

According to Meta, the removed accounts were part of large criminal networks using the company’s platforms to conduct organized online scams. These networks primarily operated through Facebook, Instagram, and other services to target victims worldwide.

Authorities from multiple countries participated in the coordinated effort. As part of the operation, the **Royal Thai Police made 21 arrests** linked to scam centers operating in the region. Meta stated that online scams have increasingly become **industrial-scale operations**, with criminal networks functioning like organized businesses.

> “Online scams have become significantly more sophisticated and industrialized in recent years, with criminal networks often based in Southeast Asia running what amount to full-scale business operations.”

The company noted that these schemes cause real harm to victims, undermine trust online, and are intentionally designed to evade detection. Alongside the account removals, Meta introduced several new tools aimed at protecting users from scam attempts.

These include:

  • warnings on Facebook when interacting with suspicious accounts

  • alerts in WhatsApp when users receive suspicious device-linking requests

  • expanded scam detection features in Messenger

  • AI-powered chat analysis to detect common fraud patterns

When suspicious behavior is detected, users may receive prompts suggesting an AI review of recent conversations.

Artificial intelligence will play a key role in detecting emerging fraud patterns, stopping suspicious transactions faster, and disrupting criminal infrastructure. Meta’s latest operation highlights how online fraud has evolved into a global industry that requires coordinated action between technology companies and international law enforcement. As scams continue to grow in scale and complexity, AI-driven detection tools may become one of the most important defenses against digital fraud.
