Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram and What’s Up, has blocked the accounts of Russian state media, including RT. The company claims that Russian mass media are conducting disinformation campaigns aimed at spreading propaganda. The US government also revealed links between RT and Russian intelligence. The Kremlin reacted negatively to these actions, saying that they complicate relations with Meta and undermine trust in the company.

Meta has a long history of opposition to Russian state media. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Mety platform was blocked in Russia and could only be accessed via a VPN. At the same time, the US prosecuted RT for covertly spreading influence through its intelligence-related cyber unit.

Meta continues to take action against Russian media, accusing them of manipulation. The Kremlin remains disappointed, but the international community sees it as an important step in the fight against disinformation.
