OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has been awarded a $200 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop AI solutions that will enhance national security. The deal will see the development of AI prototypes for military and government missions and is expected to be completed by July 2026.

What’s known about the contract?

The Defense Department confirmed that the contract will create “advanced AI tools” capable of solving critical challenges in both combat operations and administrative processes. The work will take place near Washington. The project also includes senior Silicon Valley officials, including OpenAI’s Kevin Weil, who recently joined the U.S. Army Reserve as part of the Executive Innovation Corps.

OpenAI is not the only player. Shyam Sankar (Palantir), Andrew Bosworth (Meta), and Bob McGrew (Thinking Machines Lab, ex-OpenAI) have also joined the ranks of Army advisors. The team is working on fast, scalable technical solutions. Meanwhile, OpenAI itself is recording annual revenue of $10 billion, attracting $40 billion in investment at a valuation of $300 billion. This coincided with the White House’s new requirements for the development of a competitive AI market in the United States — although the defense sector is temporarily exempted from them.

The Pentagon has made a strategic bet on OpenAI’s AI, seeing it as the key to rethinking modern warfare. The presence of Big Tech leaders in the military indicates a paradigm shift — the digital generals of the 21st century are no longer a myth. Their goal is to accelerate military innovation while maintaining US technological leadership.
