RansomHub claims to have breached MetLife’s systems, stealing 1TB of sensitive data. The company has denied the attack, stressing that the incident only affected its subsidiary in Ecuador.

The Russian hacking group RansomHub claimed to have hacked Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) and published information about it on its website. It claims to have stolen 1 terabyte of confidential documents, including financial statements, customer data and minutes of committee meetings. Samples of the stolen files are mostly in Spanish, indicating a possible leak from a division in Latin America. MetLife officials deny hacking corporate systems. Only Fondo Genesis, an Ecuadorian financial company that operates independently of MetLife’s global system, was affected. Despite this, RansomHub has placed a countdown timer and demands a ransom.

MetLife is one of the largest insurance companies in the world, operating in 40 countries and serving more than 100 million customers. In Latin America, the company is the leading life insurer. Active since February 2024, RansomHub has carried out more than 493 attacks using dual-threat techniques.

Despite MetLife’s assurances that its global systems were not compromised, the Fondo Genesis breach highlights the growing cybersecurity threat to large companies. This situation requires greater attention to data protection, especially in subsidiaries.
