The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Iranian and Russian entities for using artificial intelligence and cyber tactics to interfere in the 2024 presidential election.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and a Moscow-based organization linked to Russia’s GRU dominate the sanctions list. These organizations participated in disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining confidence in the US election process. According to the US government, both organizations were funded through the GRU and the CIA and maintained servers equipped with artificial intelligence tools that were used to create and spread disinformation.

Iran: The IRGC-affiliated Cognitive Design Production Center (CDPC) created information operations aimed at inciting social and political conflict.

Russia: The Center for Geopolitical Expertise (CGE), controlled by the GRU, was engaged in the distribution of deepfakes and fake news through a network of sites, disguising them as legitimate sources.

Sanctions are an important step in countering election interference and strengthening cybersecurity. However, the US must continue to invest in protecting critical infrastructure and reducing the risk of artificial intelligence being used for cyber attacks.
