American subsidiaries Kurita Water Industries and Ito En were victims of ransomware attacks that led to data theft and server encryption.
On November 29, Kurita America, a subsidiary of Kurita Water Industries, discovered that its servers were infected with a virus. The attackers stole the data of customers, business partners and employees. The main servers have been restored, but the investigation is ongoing. This was followed by a December 2 attack on Ito En North America servers, where attackers encrypted data that is currently being restored from backups. The attack did not disrupt the core operations of the two companies, but the leak is still under investigation.
Kurita Water Industries is the largest manufacturer of water treatment chemicals with annual sales of US$2.4 billion. Ito En is a leading Japanese producer of green tea. Both companies are actively developing their business in the USA. In 2024, Japanese companies such as Fujitsu and Game Freak were frequently targeted by ransomware attacks.
These attacks highlight the need to strengthen cyber security in the US, which is becoming a priority target for multinational companies, especially cybercriminals.
