In Kyiv, the Security Service of Ukraine detained two people who coordinated information diversions for the benefit of Russian intelligence, using bot farms for mass creation of fake accounts and disinformation, which affected socio-political stability in Ukraine.
Criminals used fake accounts in social networks and messengers to imitate real profiles of important Ukrainian officials, including the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. These accounts not only forwarded official messages from departments, but were also used to extort money from users. Specialized equipment and unregistered weapons were found during the searches of the homes of botfarm organizers.
The activities of the bot farms included the registration of new fake pages on a daily basis, the use of SIM cards to register controlled accounts and interaction with Russian intelligence services, which provided the necessary “methods” for conducting information attacks. The detention of these persons confirms the SBU’s commitment to protect Ukraine from informational threats and destabilizing actions. The perpetrators face up to seven years in prison for their actions, and an investigation is currently underway into the further qualification of their crimes.
