TikTok CEO Shaw Zi Chew expressed his belief that the company will win a legal challenge that would not ban the app in the US unless its Chinese parent ByteDance divests its US assets within 270 days.
US President Joe Biden signed a law giving ByteDance 270 days to divest TikTok in the US or face a total ban. Shaw Zee Chew, CEO of TikTok, said in a video message after the law was signed that the company hopes to win the legal battle, citing the US Constitution and legal system. Chew also noted that the ban would deprive the 170 million US users of the “community and communication” platform, as well as the seven million businesses that rely on the app. At the same time, he pointed to the company’s huge costs to ensure data security and comply with the requirements of American lawmakers.
The fight over TikTok has become one of the important fronts in the confrontation between the US and China in the Internet and technology. Concerns about data privacy and national security have led to a number of legislative initiatives and legal challenges, including an earlier attempt by President Donald Trump to ban TikTok that was blocked by the courts. The new law gives the Biden administration more powerful legal tools to crack down on apps deemed a security threat.
Amid growing concerns about China’s potential access to Americans’ data, the legislation passed with overwhelming votes in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. TikTok plans to challenge the legislation on First Amendment grounds, and to continue operating as ByteDance prepares for a possible sale.
