Al-Taheri Al-Mashriqi, 26, from Rotherham, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after admitting to hacking more than 3,000 websites, stealing the data of millions of Facebook users and defacing government resources.

Al-Mashriqi was arrested in 2022 thanks to information from US law enforcement. The investigation found that he hacked Yemeni government websites, media resources in Israel, religious organizations in Canada and the US, as well as the California State Water Board website.

The hacker had personal data of more than 4 million Facebook users, as well as stolen credentials from Netflix, PayPal and other services. He often defaced sites, leaving political and religious messages in favor of the groups “Spider Team” and “Yemen Cyber Army”.

Forensic analysis confirmed that Al-Mashriki hosted scripts to collect logins, downloaded the entire content of an Israeli news resource, and disrupted dozens of platforms. He was charged with ten offences under the Computer Misuse Act, but after pleading guilty to nine counts, a Sheffield court sentenced him.

“Serial hackers” like Al-Mashriki combine cybercrime with ideological activity. Their attacks are aimed not only at financial gain, but also at political propaganda. The “Yemen Cyber Army” is known for large-scale cyberattacks against foreign websites, which often ended in mass theft of credentials and disruption of resources.

In such cases, it is not only institutions that suffer, but also ordinary users – their accounts and personal data end up on black markets, which increases the risks of fraud and cybercrime on a global scale.

Although a 20-month sentence seems lenient for such a large-scale criminal activity, the Al-Mashriki case has become a signal that even those who have been flaunting “thousands of hacked sites” on forums for years will eventually face justice. It highlights the need for international cooperation against hacker groups that are politically or financially motivated.
