Sony has officially confirmed that starting in 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs. The company says the decision reflects the rapid shift toward digital game purchases and changing consumer habits.
Starting in January 2028, all new games for PlayStation consoles will be released exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retail partners selling digital editions. However, the decision will not affect games that have already been released or are scheduled to launch on physical discs before that date.
Sony says the move is a natural response to changing market trends. During the 2025 financial year, approximately 80% of full-game sales came from digital downloads. According to the company, this shift in consumer behavior was the primary reason for ending physical disc releases for future titles.
The company stated:
“As consumer preferences and the entertainment industry continue shifting from physical media to digital formats, production of physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028.”
Sony also said it will continue investing in new ways for players to access games while allowing customers to purchase digital titles through both the PlayStation Store and retail partners.
At the same time, the company announced the gradual shutdown of the PlayStation Store for the aging PS3 and PS Vita consoles. The service will first be discontinued in selected Latin American countries later this year, before shutting down worldwide by July 2027. Sony says the decision is driven by the older platforms’ incompatibility with modern PlayStation Network payment security systems.
Once the stores are closed, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital content for those platforms. However, Sony says previously purchased games and downloadable content will remain available for re-download for the foreseeable future.
PlayStation’s transition to a fully digital model reflects a broader trend across the gaming industry. More publishers are prioritizing digital distribution, while major retailers continue reducing shelf space for physical game copies. At the same time, Sony’s decision has sparked debate among players who value collecting discs, reselling games, and preserving physical media for the long term.
Despite the shift toward digital distribution, owners of physical editions have little reason to worry. All games released or announced for physical disc distribution before January 2028 will continue to launch on disc as planned.
