T-Mobile and other US telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon have been victims of large-scale Chinese cyber-espionage, including the interception of data and the hacking of private communications.
American telecommunications companies have become targets of cyber espionage group Salt Typhoon, also known as GhostEmperor and FamousSparrow. The operation allows attackers to obtain recordings of telephone conversations, intercept private conversations of politicians and government officials, and copy data that is subject to judicial requests by US law enforcement officers. Despite T-Mobile’s assurances that there was no significant impact on their systems, the FBI and CISA investigations are ongoing.
The T-Mobile incident is yet another reminder of the growing number of cyber threats that threaten the privacy of communications and the security of the nation’s infrastructure.
