Swiss cyber security authorities have warned of a new threat: attackers are sending fake emails on behalf of the weather service MeteoSwiss with QR codes that install the malicious app “Coper” on mobile devices. This program steals data from banks and mobile applications.

The attacker launched a new campaign under the guise of the MeteoSwiss weather service. The email contains a QR code to download a “severe weather warning program,” which it claims is necessary to keep your family safe. Instead, the QR code leads to a website where users download the “Koper” Trojan, also known as “Octo2.”

This malicious app mimics the official Alertswiss but has a different name and design. Once installed, Coper accesses the data of more than 383 mobile applications, including banking applications, and transmits them to the attacker’s servers.

Swiss cybersecurity authorities recommend ignoring these emails and not scanning the QR code or downloading the app only from the official store. If the application is already installed, it is recommended to reset the factory settings of the smartphone.
